The fried chicken flap

Give Us A Break...
About Fried Chicken!

We say, "Give us a break, Paula Harris" (President of the NAACP) ... on her little foray into publicity by requesting Giant to take a sign down saying they had a special on Fried Chicken in honor of Black History Week.

I suppose "Soul Food" is taboo too, right?

I suppose Corned Beef and Cabbage specials are taboo on days honoring Irish Heritage??

I suppose Spaghetti and Meat Balls specials are taboo on days honoring Italian Heritage??

We’re not really defending Giant Food Stores, but to make a public commotion about Fried Chicken is a bit much!

Ms. Harris evidently has some kind of plan in mind to seek public office, or something like that, because otherwise this kind of publicity probably would not have been undertaken.

It should not have been.

Feb. 13, 2002

Imagine for a moment you're attempting to hijack black heritage to line your own pockets (see Museum Proposal). Who would be the last person you'd want to antagonize?  If you answered the president of the local chapter of the NAACP, move to the head of the class.

Early in February, 2002 a local Giant Food store ran an in-store fried chicken special in commemoration of Black History.

The president of the Harrisburg Chapter of the NAACP requested the sign be removed. It was and appropriate apologies tendered.

Presumably Giant Food Corporation has issued directives to all stores to avoid similar incidents in the future. That’s simply good business.

But business is not, by it’s nature, socially responsible. It has been taught to be responsible over the years by thousands of people like Paula Harris and others who have followed in the footsteps of Rosa Parks.

Antoun has some fanciful ideas about the benefit of advertising in her weekly:

"Our readers believe in what we stand for in our editorial policy and that enhances the integrity of our advertisers."

Our view is quite different: The Paxton Herald's reign of journalistic terror is financed by advertising revenue.
